DIE ENTE UND MEIN BORSALINO
Die Ente und mein Borsalino is a photographic and archival project that explores intergenerational parallels between my father and myself. The work began with the discovery of an extensive photographic archive my father created in his twenties, the same period of life in which I began taking photographs seriously. Encountering these images felt like looking into a mirror across time. While going through the archive, I was struck by unexpected similarities in the way we approached photography: the subjects we were drawn to, the moments we considered worth preserving, and the quiet curiosity with which we observed the world around us. At the same time, the photographs reveal differences shaped by the contexts in which we lived. His images reflect another era, another set of social conditions, and a different understanding of youth, freedom, and identity. The project brings our photographs into dialogue. By juxtaposing images from both archives, Die Ente und mein Borsalino examines how personal perspectives can echo across generations while still remaining distinct. Particular attention is given to the individuals portrayed in the photographs. Fragments of stories and traces of relationships appear throughout the work, creating a sense of familiarity and intimacy with people who might otherwise remain anonymous. Through this process, the archive becomes more than a collection of images, it becomes a space of encounter between two biographies. The project reflects on photography as a medium that connects personal memory, family history, and broader cultural narratives, revealing how different generations can unknowingly share ways of seeing and interpreting the world.
